NORTH ADAMS -- The St. Joseph's basketball team was leading by six in the fourth quarter. Then the inexperienced Drury team found a way to comeback and beat the Crusaders at home, 48-44 on Tuesday night.
Cam Parrino made back-to-back baskets for Drury to tie the game. Nolan Bird drained a 3-pointer to put the Blue Devils up 3 with a little more than 30 seconds remaining. A St. Joe's free throw with 29 seconds left brought them within a layup, but Drury broke the Crusaders' press and played keep-away until just 13 seconds remained and Bird was fouled. He drained both for the final four-point margin.
St. Joe's Tank Roberson, who led all scorers with 23, left the game part way through the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury.
"It's not like they were lighting it up with him. He definitely was the catalyst," Drury coach Jack Racette said. "We dug in when we had to."
The late lead wasn't the first one of the game for Drury, though. The Blue Devils led by eight at the break after putting together quarters of 19 and 13 points.
St. Joe's made a change on the backside of halftime and got itself back into the game.
"We got open looks. They played man and we knocked them down [in the first half]," Racette said. "They went to zone to start second half and we got five points."
McCann boys' basketball
PALMER -- The Hornets opened with a first half they would like to forget. But coach Mike Nykorchuck
"I wasn't happy with the first half at all. Even though we were leading after the first quarter, I wasn't happy," he said. "We were playing scared. We had no energy."
That changed in the second half, and McCann topped Tri-County foe Pathfinder 62-55.
The difference was a commitment to rebounding and free throws.
The Hornets hauled din just 11 rebounds in the first half. That number jumped to 24 in the second. Kyle Parada. The backup center grabbed nine of his team-high 12 rebounds in the second half. He finished the night with 11 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
"That was huge," Nykorchuck said.
The Hornets held their lead in the fourth quarter with sound free-throw shooting. They were 11 of 12 from the line in the final eight minutes, and Shane Fuller was a perfect 8 for 8.
McCann girls' basketball
SPRINGFIELD -- Sci-Tech was committed to double-teaming Mary Nguyen whenever and wherever she was on the court. It didn't matter if she had the ball or not.
It didn't matter much as the senior led the Hornets to a 43-38 road win.
"That's a tough place to play," coach Mike Dowling said. "[The kids] handled it well."
Sci-Tech continually fouled Nguyen in the second half. Those fouls piled up in a hurry and with about five minutes left in the game, Sci Tech had reached 10 fouls. Nguyen finished the night with a team-high 15 points. She was 7 of 13 from the line.
Eileen Zajac had a strong night for McCann, adding 12 points to the cause. She also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Hoosac swimming
CRARYVILLE, N.Y. -- It wasn't the best day in the pool for the Hurricanes, as they were swept by Taconic Hills. The girls lost 89-81, while the boys fell 84-56.
Emma and Julia Whitney each won two events in the losing effort. Emma took the 200 free and 500 free, while Julia took first in the 200 IM and 100 fly. Maria Mazzu set a personal record in the 500 free, breaking 7 minutes.
On the boys' side, Mike DiSanti was the lone double winner. He claims the 50 free and 100 fly for the Hurricanes.
