WATERVILLE, Maine -- The first game of the trip to Maine didn't start well for the ninth-ranked Williams College men's basketball team. Fortunately for the Ephs, it finished fine.
Taylor Epley scored on his put back with 29 seconds left and Daniel Wohl clinched the victory with a pair of free throws as the Ephs held off stubborn Colby 64-61 on Friday night.
Williams (19-2, 7-0 NESCAC), trailed 38-35 at halftime. Neither team led by more than five points in the second half. Colby (6-14, 2-5) tied the game on Patrick Stewart's hoop with 47 seconds left.
After Epley scored, Mike Mayer fouled Stewart and Stewart made one of two free throws. Wohl got the rebound with five seconds left, was fouled and made both shots. Connor O'Neil's desperation 3-point shot fell short for Colby.

women's basketball
WATERVILLE, Maine -- In the nightcap of the doubleheader, 20th-ranked Williams (17-4, 6-1) held host Colby to 18 points in the first half en route to a 60-42 win.
The Mules did score five points in the first two minutes of the half, but only managed 13 for the other 18.
Claire Baecher, returning to her home state, had a game-high 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jennie Harding added 11 points and Kellie Macdonald 10 for Williams.
Williams men's hockey
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Unranked Trinity (11-4-3, 8-2-3) scored two second-period goals against 10th-ranked Williams (12-5-2, 9-3-1), and held off
Charlie Mullan's goal at 10:06 of the second period made it 2-0. Peter Mistretta scored his 14th of the year at 2:01 of the third, pulling the Ephs to within a goal. Chris Menard gave the Bantams a two-goal advantage at 4:24.
Williams women's hockey
AMHERST -- Anne Gillard scored two of Amherst's four goals in the first period, to help Amherst beat Williams 7-2.
Tori Salmon chipped in with a goal and three assists for Amherst (9-7-1, 7-3-1).
Aimee Dennett and Sam Cutts had third-period goals for the Ephs (8-10-1, 4-6-1). Goalie Chloe Billadeau was chased after two periods, giving up six goals on 30 shots.
Drury boys' basketball
GREAT BARRINGTON -- Monument outscored Drury by 14 points in the third to power its way to a 55-47 win.
"We picked up our defensive energy in the second half," said Monument coach Mike Saporito. "We played with a lot more intelligence offensively. It was a total team effort. The guys came out in the second half with a lot more energy."
The Blue Devils cruised in the first half and led 28-16 at halftime, but barely found the basket in the third quarter. They managed just seven points, while Monument poured in 21 to take two-point lead heading into the final eight minutes. But the defense couldn't stop the Spartans, as they scored 18 to finish with the eight-point win.
Drury got 15 points from Nolan Bird.
McCann boys' basketball
TURNERS FALLS -- The Hornets couldn't find their shooting groove in a 58-47 loss to Franklin Tech.
The Eagles made a committment to get the ball inside and it paid off with repeated trips to the foul line. They convereted the majority of theirs, while the Hornet did not. Franklin Tech made 21 of 39 from the stripe, while McCann was just 12 of 27. Chad Raimer accounted for eight of those.
"We have not shot foul shots good all year," coach Mike Nykorchuck said, citing it's one of the four things you need to do to win game.
McCann led by five after the first and trailed by three at the break. Then the offense sputtered, scoring just 20 points in the final 16 minutes. Raimer added a basket to his eight free throws for 10 points, and Josh Superneau had 12, including a pair of 3s.
"It was just and ugly, physical, nasty game," Nykorchuck said. "I think we kind of got caught up in the emotion of the game. We started to turn the ball over."
