Michael Vick canceled his book tour after death threats against him and his family.
Welcome back to America, Mr. Vick.
This is the national case that offers inspection of a U.S. corrections and penal system that convicts men and women then condemns for a lifetime after they have served their time.
Animal lovers are back with their dismal defense of four-legged creatures. It's raining cats and dogs again for Vick, who served time for his role in a dogfighting ring. Vick will suffer an eternity of punishment from animal fanatics.
For a moment, let's allow animal rights defenders to have their way regarding Mr. Vick. Deny him every right, including his ability to earn a living, write a book, and own a canine, feline or Chia Pet.
Michael Vick is done. Pack up the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback's belongings then ship him off to Siberia.
Since death threaters refuse to forgive then they should display similar convictions for a United States that perpetrated horrific crimes against humanity from forced relocation and disassembly of Native Americans, then slavery, onward toward segregation, gender persecution, proliferation of drugs and guns in urban America, and lifetime persecution for people who serve time.
Re-entry is nothing more than a return to a society that will imprison felons with a regiment of hoops that almost no person could jump through.
Perhaps, those who terrorize Mr. Vick and his family with death
After all, America has bloody hands from all kinds of nefarious actions that only God could forgive; acts like genocide, slavery, torture, lynchings, plus, a litany of other crimes against humanity.
This is the country that engineered the Tuskegee experiment, a clinical study that tracked the natural progression of untreated syphilis in rural black men. Sharecroppers thought they received free health care but instead served as human test rats as the U.S. Public Health Service allowed them to suffer then die.
These people were not dogs or other family pets. They were living, breathing, humans who received free yet fictional medical care, free food and free burial insurance for their indecent exposure to syphilis.
While Tuskegee Airmen soared above racism and prejudice, other Tuskegee men were trapped by a diabolical scheme made favorable by a salesman-like pitch of free accessories.
Free owns a certain amount of appeal when pushed against impoverished, generational poverty, destitute, ignorance, uneducated, or challenged. Free is a setup for syphilis experiments, welfare, and perennial unemployment.
Freedom rivals a Janis Joplin definition of "just another word for nothing left to lose.' U.S. freedom allows for speech, hate, love and just about every other exercise in human behavior.
Thank God this nation does not permit threats on others lives. Mr. Vick has served his time and should be provided all opportunities available for free people in our wonderfully free society.
As for Mr. Vick's ownership of a dog? Fantastic. If we head down a road of disallowment then will we start a witch hunt for all women who have had to make that difficult decision of abortion.
Are we saying that if a woman had an abortion then she should be denied future opportunities to have children? Will we threathen their lives, too?
Fortunately, wise men and women have not only learned, but practice, the fantastic human art of forgiveness.
Most give allowances to family members, friends and even pets who for the umpteenth did their business on the living room carpet.
Most people and pets deserve second chances.
Yes, even Michael Vick, these United States. And Fido.
