HATFIELD -- McCann doomed itself by committing seven errors on the way to a loss to Smith Academy, 10-1.
"Seven errors, that really hurt," McCann coach Pat Ryan said. "A lot of balls were dropping with no one calling them off. That was really the key stat of the game. It's tough to come back from that."
The Hornets offense couldn't support a shaky defense. Smith's David Longstreeth allowed just two hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
"They had a very good pitcher," Ryan said. "He had good stuff, obviously, he threw a two hitter. He threw hard and soft and had a nice curveball."
Joe Gwozdz took the loss for the Hornets. Justin Racine had a double and T.J. Therrien had the only other hit for McCann.
Smith jumped on the board with two early runs and didn't look back.
"It's been like that the last three games, the other team has scored in the first inning," Ryan said. "It seems like we dug a hole for ourselves and we can't seem to get out of it."
