PITTSFIELD -- Jon Bianchi's day didn't start out very well, but the ending was epic.
Bianchi, 0 for 4 up to that point, blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give St. Joseph's a 4-2 win over Southern Division rival Mount Greylock on Wednesday at Doyle Field.
"I was just looking to put the ball in play," said Bianchi. "We had a man on base, so I was just hoping to move him over. I wasn't trying to hit a home run, but when I swung, I got all of it."
The home run, the only extra-base hit of the contest, capped an outstanding pitchers' duel between the Crusaders' Pat Latini and Greylock's Ian Brink, both of whom allowed only three hits.
"Latini was great," said Crusader coach Dennis Murphy. "Brink was great. This was a tremendous game, I thought everyone on both sides played well."
The Crusaders were down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh. With Nate Stump on third base, Luke Clark attempted a suicide squeeze to get Stump home. He popped the ball up, and two Greylock players converged on it. They collided, and the ball dropped in.
Stump raced home, and the game was tied.
In the bottom of the ninth, Connor Lein singled. With one out, Bianchi came to the plate.
"I hadn't done anything up to that point," he said. "I wasn't having a very good day."
He made up for it with one swing.
