NORTH ADAMS -- The Western Massachusetts Babe Ruth 15-and-under State Tournament hosts gave Westfield a rude welcome to town Friday night with a mercy-rule victory.
North Adams brought the bats out early and rode the hot streak for all five innings on the way to a 19-2 win.
"We didn't want to watch the ball go by. If the ball was there we wanted to hit it," Logan Rumbolt said. "We wanted to get a jump on them and get the first win of the tourney."
Rumbolt and Matt Koperniak each reached base five times in the contest, combining for eight RBI and seven runs scored.
Koperniak was a perfect 5 for 5 with a three-run double in the fifth inning to help give North Adams some insurance runs.
"They were just laying it in there good," Koperniak said. "I was getting some good fastballs, right down the middle of the plate, too. So I was just going with them."
North Adams slugged 19 hits, while Westfield managed just three off the pitching combination of Brodie Altiere and Shane Garvey. Altiere pitched four innings to earn the win, giving up just two runs on two hits. He struck out five Westfield batters.
"He was mixing up [his pitches] well," North Adams manager Joe Altiere said. "He stayed pretty controlled. He didn't try to over power anyone and was letting his defense make the plays."
North Adams will challenge Leominster at 4 p.m. at the Alcombright Complex. Leominster defeated Pittsfield in Game 1 of the tournament, 3-1 on Friday.
"I think we're really confident heading into our next game," Koperniak said. "I heard Leominster is pretty good, so it should be a good game."
North Adams started the offense early on Friday. Brodie Altiere tripled to score Rumbolt and the offense never slowed. Jesse DiLego beat out an infield single for two RBI to give North Adams a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
The biggest inning for the tournament hosts came in the fourth. North Adams sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on nine hits. Koperniak started the inning with the first of three-straight singles for North Adams. Rumbolt had a two-run double in the inning.
"[Constant offense] really pumps you up," Rumbolt said. "You want to follow up with a big hit and don't want to get that first out for your team. And once you move someone over, you want to be running the bases and be the next guy to score."
