Drury (11-3) drew first blood in the third inning, when freshman Kayla Brown-Wood connected for her first varsity home run. The game remained 1-0 Devils until the fourth and fifth when the Hurricanes' (5-10) defense fell apart.
Of the eight errors the 'Canes made in the game, they committed four of them in the fourth and fifth. This paved the way for Drury to score four and three runs, respectively, in the two frames, turning a manageable 1-0 deficit for Hoosac into an eight-run hole.
"When you make errors against a good team like Drury, they capitalize," Hoosac Head Coach Mike Ameen said. "They made us pay for every one of them. They were the better team tonight."
The Hurricanes finally got on the board in the seventh. Heather Peltier led off with a double and advanced to third on an error. She later scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Kaitlyn Faucher. The Devils added one each in the sixth and seventh to cap the scoring.
Chloe McGrath pitched for Hoosac, going the distance,
Jayda Westcott finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Devils. Kait Moresi went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Megan Boyer continued her impressive comeback from knee surgery with a 3-for-4 day including three RBI.
"Megan is just scorching the ball right now," Drury Head Coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "It's so great to see her back in the lineup and doing well.
"This was a big win for us, because even though Hoosac played kind of sloppy on defense, they are no pushover."
Drury hosts Monument Mountain on Monday at 4:30 p.m., while Hoosac plays host to Lee this afternoon at 4:15.
Greylock tennis
WILLIAMSTOWN -- You gotta know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em.
The Mount Greylock boys' tennis team gambled on Thursday against Mount Everett, and it paid off. The Mounties have had a perfect season going, yet they still went with just two starters in the lineup.
It clearly didn't matter as the boys improved to 10-0 with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Eagles.
Matt Vaughan (No. 1 singles) and Rohan Shastri (No. 2) were the only two starters in the lineup, and they continued their dominance over the competition. Vaughan defeated Tyler Weinstein, 6-3, 6-0, while Shastri blanked Peter Zoliarski 6-0, 6-0.
Coming off the bench to play at No. 3 was Dan Weiner, who also earned a shutout, 6-0, 6-0 over Tanner Worthington. The No. 2 doubles' team of Matt Cheung and Andrej Samardzic took care of Justin Ward and Brendan Farnum, 6-0, 6-1. No. 1 doubles was the only match the Mounties lost on the day.
"Our goal today was to give some of the younger kids some playing time," Greylock boys' Head Coach Mary Vaughan said. "It's been tough getting them some time out there because they want to keep the perfect season going, and they want to have the best possible chance of doing that, which means playing the starters all the time. But today we switched it up, and they had fun and it worked out."
Meanwhile, the girls (4-6) completed the sweep of Everett, winning by the same count 4-1.
Sophia Santore defeated Faren Worthington, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. Ruthie Thier followed at No. 2 with 6-1, 6-0 wins over Kaitlyn Sullivan. Irena Pandzic rounded out singles at No. 3 with a 1-6 loss, before bouncing back with 6-0, 6-3 wins to take the match.
"Irena really showed what she's capable of today," Greylock girls' Head Coach John Jacobbe said. "She lost the first set, but she battled all the way back to win the next two rather easily, and take the point for our team."
Cleo Levin and Maggie Dewey topped Jocelyn Hastings and Aly O'Connor at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-1. Just like the Mountie boys, No. 1 doubles was the only match the girls lost.
Greylock will next travel to Drury on Monday at 4 p.m.
Hoosac track & field
CHESHIRE -- The Hoosac Valley boys' and girls' track teams completed a sweep of Taconic on Thursday. The boys won rather easily 83-58, while the girls squeaked out a nailbiter 72-69.
For the boys, Jeremy Pierce was a triple winner, taking first in the 200-meter, and the long and high jumps. Kai Chee picked up two wins, taking the mile and 800-meter, and also earned a second-place finish in the triple jump. Payton Linder won the 100 hurdles and placed second in the 300 hurdles. Tom Meczywor tied for first in the 100-meter, and took third in the 200-meter and high jump.
On the girls' side, Bethany Frye won the 2-mile event, and took second in both the mile and javelin. Allie Bliel was a double winner in the shotput and discus, while Becky Bosworth picked up second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles.

Hoosac baseball
ADAMS -- The Hoosac Valley baseball team ran into a tough Pittsfield squad on Thursday at Renfrew Field. By the time the Generals left town, they had an 11-3 win in their pocket.
The Hurricanes (6-6) only had four total hits on the day, and Andrew Rinaldi had three of them, including two triples and an RBI. In the first, he tripled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Rinaldi then hit another three-bagger in the sixth, scoring on a Dan Barrett fielder's choice groundout.
Meanwhile, Pittsfield had balanced scoring throughout the game. The Generals plated one in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth, three in the fifth and two final runs in the sixth.
Josh Gould suffered the loss for the 'Canes, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits. He walked five and struck out one.
"They outpitched us, outhit us and outplayed us in the field," Hoosac Head Coach Bob Rivard said. "We were constantly pitching from behind, both in counts and on the scoreboard, and that's never easy. And then our offense couldn't deliver any clutch hits."
Hoosac travels to Monument Mountain tomorrow morning at 11.
Greylock baseball
PITTSFIELD -- The Mount Greylock baseball team struggled offensively on Thursday in Pittsfield. Much of the reason was because Taconic pitcher Jake Rand was mowing down Mounties left and right en route to a 4-1 win.
Rand struck out 10 and held Greylock off the bases for much of the game.
The Mounties (5-6) only had four hits all day off Rand and three of them came in the seventh inning. However, the Greylock's rally fell three runs short, as it only scored one run. Keith Martin led off with a single. Chris Koch followed with another single. After an out, Chris Geannelis walked, loading the bases. Than Finan then singled in the lone Mounties' run.
Taconic scored three in the second and added one more in the fifth.
Finan suffered the loss, going six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out one.
"Rand threw a heck of a game," Greylock Head Coach Steve Messina said. "We just couldn't hit him. Finally, we put together a little rally in the seventh there, but it wasn't enough."
Greylock travels to Lee tomorrow morning at 11.
McCann softball
NORTH ADAMS -- After winning three games in a row, the McCann Tech softball team had higher hopes going into its rematch with Southwick, the top team in its league. The Rams, however, burst the Hornets' bubble, winning 9-4 on Thursday and sweeping the season series.
McCann (4-8) struggled at the plate, managing only five hits, while striking out seven times. The Hornets still managed to score four runs, though. They crossed the plate twice in the fourth, thanks to a two-run double by Sara Simonetti, and two more times in the sixth.
Southwick on the other hand, capitalized on four errors by the McCann defense to extend its rallies. The Rams scored three in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth before adding two final runs in the seventh.
Katelyn Haring took the loss in a complete-game effort. She allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 14 hits, with three Ks, three walks, and she also hit a batter.
"Without the errors, this is a totally different ballgame and we have a shot at winning it," McCann Head Coach Robin Finnegan said. "But we didn't help ourselves out at the plate, because we didn't really hit the ball."
McCann will next travel to Gateway on Monday afternoon at 4.
