NORTH ADAMS -- Two Eagle Street businesses have been featured in Yankee Magazine's Best of New England edition: Martha Flood Studios and Jack's Hot Dogs.
The annual list contains 317 locations across New England, drawn from restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions.
"I was flabbergasted when I learned I was chosen," artist Martha Flood said, adding that she learned from an email someone sent her. "I'm also really grateful."
Flood's storefront and studio, which opened in April 2010 at 38 Eagle St., was selected as "best fabric design" in the annual list. The studio features Flood's own textile designs with patterns inspired by nature.
"They are textures and patterns you'd find in the wilderness or your backyard," she said. "I've noticed the patterns elicit an emotional response, which is a fun side effect of it."
Flood said her designs are manufactured in a small factory in South Carolina, which creates the fabric from recycled bottles. Newer technology has made it possible for designers like her to be able to have their designs printed, she said.
"It's contemporary printing technology that allows manufacturers and individuals to print small quantities," Flood explained.
Along with her cloth, her studio features her own creations, including bags, pillows, book covers and place mats.
Flood hopes being featured in Yankee will lead people to visit her website, www.martha flood.com, or to visit her studio.
The iconic Jack's Hot Dogs at 12 Eagle St., was selected as "best retro hot dogs" by Yankee. The grill was founded by Jaffros "Jack" Levanos in 1917, and is owned by grandson Jeff Levanos of Clarksburg. Attempts to reach Levanos were unsuccessful as of press time Friday.
In 2010, Jack's was featured in the state Office of Tourism and Travel's list of "1,000 Greatest Places in Massachusetts." Of the 90 attractions from the Berkshires featured on the list, 10 were located in North Adams.
Heather Atwell, communications manager for Yankee Magazine, said selections from Massachusetts are made by travel writers Patricia Harris and David Lyon.
"Our in-house editors also pass along tips about possible picks based on their own travels or feedback from readers," Atwell added.
Other attractions recognized in Northern Berkshire include Mezze Bistro and Bar in Williamstown, which was chosen as "best garden setting;" and the Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground in Florida, which received recognition as the "best hiker's campground."
